This international rating system tells you how water-resistant your headlamp or handheld is. Ranging from IPX0 (no protection against water) to IPX8 (protection against continual submersion in water at depths down to 100 m), this system gives you a quick and easy way to determine whether a specific device will meet the demands of your environment. If you need a light that’s resistant to only moderate splashing or light snow, look for at least an IPX4 rating. For completely waterproof functionality, choose a device with an IPX7 rating or higher.

Essential Winter Features

The reduced dexterity of thick winter gloves makes easy-to-operate devices even more important. To prevent having to take your gloves on and off when toggling between settings, opt for a light with a large, elevated button. If using a handheld light, consider one with a molded non-slip grip for secure use when wearing gloves. If you’ll need to change batteries quickly in the cold, look for a headlamp that features an easy-access battery door.
